Kuwait National Petroleum Company has appealed to Egypt and India with a request to provide technical staff to work on oil facilities in Kuwait during the general strike of the local oil industry workers, local media reported, citing the company’s spokesman.

DUBAI (Sputnik) — The strike is expected to start on Sunday. Kuwait’s trade unions organized the strike to protest cuts in benefits and wages for oil and gas workers.

According to the Al Rai newspaper, the number of foreign workers to be involved in Kuwait is yet undecided. The paper added that the daily loss to the country’s oil and gas industry to be caused by the strike will amount to 12-16 million Kuwaiti dinars ($40 million).

The Kuwaiti government decided to lower wages and benefits for 20,000 public employees as the Kuwait's economy, highly dependent on oil, suffered significant losses amid falling oil prices.

Global oil prices dropped from $115 to some $40 per barrel between June 2014 and March 2016 largely because of prolonged global oversupply and weak demand.
