Russia and Egypt are discussing a possible delivery of up to 40 Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) aircraft to the EgyptAir airline, Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) —On Tuesday, Moscow and Cairo signed a memorandum on the delivery of four SSJ100 planes to Egypt's Air Leisure charter airline. The deal includes an option for six more aircraft.

"Another airline, EgyptAir, is at the moment considering the possibility of developing flight connection from Egypt to other countries using our Sukhoi Superjet. We are now discussing the possibility of delivering up to 40 airplanes [to them]," Manturov said in an interview with the Rossiya-24 television channel, adding that the possible deal was a "large promising project."

The Superjet 100 is a twin-engine regional passenger airliner that completed its maiden flight in 2008 and was first commercialized in 2011.

According to the aircraft manufacturer, Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company, a total of 64 SSJ100s are currently in operation. The main operators of the aircraft are the Russian flag carrier Aeroflot (26 aircraft), the Mexican airline Interjet (19 aircraft), and Gazpromavia (10 aircraft).
