MOSCOW (Sputnik) Russia hopes to strengthen bilateral coordination with Doha within the Forum of Gas Exporting Countries (GECF), speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament Sergei Naryshkin said Monday.

"Our two countries stood at the origins of the GECF. And we hope that now, when the natural gas production and trade face an important challenge, we will strengthen our coordination in this international organization", Naryshkin said at a meeting with Qatari Emir Tamim Hamad al-Thani in Moscow.

He added that Russia positively assessed investment cooperation between the two sides, in particular, cooperation between the Qatar Investment Authority, the Russian Direct Investment Fund and the VTB bank.

GECF is an international governmental organization of the world’s leading gas producers. The member countries together account for some 67 percent of the world’s proven natural gas reserves.

The organization comprises Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela. Iraq, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Norway, Oman and Peru have an observer status.
