The equipment sold to Taiwan includes 250 Block I-92F MANPAD Stinger Missiles, four Block I-92F MANPAD Stinger Fly-to-Buy Missiles as well as related equipment.
The estimated cost of the sale is $217 million.
The United States has sold 36 Amphibious Assault Vehicles to Taiwan, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced.
According to the release, the provided equipment includes 30 0.50 caliber M2 machine guns and six 7.62mm M240 machine guns at an estimated cost of $375 million.
The United States has approved a sale of two Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates and 208 Javelin missiles to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced.
The cost of the frigates is estimated at $190 million, while the estimated cost of the Javelin missiles is $57 million.
China has voiced opposition to the sale and called on the United States to stop supplying arms to Taiwan.
On Tuesday, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said supplying arms to Taiwan constitutes an involvement by the United States in the internal affairs of China, and could damage bilateral relations.
In 1949, the Chinese nationalist government was defeated by the communists and had to flee to Taiwan, where it formed a separate government. Since, relations between China and Taiwan have been strained, as Beijing refuses to recognize Taiwan as a separate and independent political and diplomatic entity.
