MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Merkel added that she could definitely promise that there would be no tax increases amid the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.

Germany expects an influx of about 1.5 million refugees fleeing poverty and violence in the Middle East and North Africa in 2015, well over a previously announced official forecast of 800,000, according to Bild.

"We can be glad that our economy has been well managed for years and that our economic situation is currently in a good state," Merkel said in an interview with the German Bild newspaper.
