MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian energy company Gazprom's CEO Alexei Miller and Italian Eni's Head Claudio Descalzi pledged to further develop active cooperation of companies on the European gas market during their meeting in Moscow, the Italian company said in a press release on Thursday.

“The two companies confirmed the plan to continue their active collaboration within the European and Italian gas market, especially with respect to the existing contracts,” the press release said.

It added that the meeting was held “in an atmosphere of cordiality” and touched upon “the global energy scenario with a particular focus on the dynamics of the gas market in Europe.”

As of March 2015, Eni was the tenth world largest oil and gas company based on market value. It operates in 83 countries and employs about 84,000 people.

Gazprom accounts for 12 percent of the global gas output and holds some 17 percent of global gas reserves. Last year it provided Italy, the second largest consumer of Russian gas in the European Union, with 21.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
