Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation will be divided into two institutions to bring more accountability and transparency in the way the company operates, Nigerean Charge d'Affaires to Russia Gafai Ibrahim Usman said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A reconfiguration of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is underway to eliminate corruption in the country’s energy sector, Nigerean Charge d'Affaires to Russia Gafai Ibrahim Usman told Sputnik.

“The whole essence of this [reconfiguration] is to arrest the corruption that has been going on in the oil center… The whole essence of breaking the NNPC into two is really to bring more accountability, more transparency in the way NNPC conducts its activity,” Usman said.

NNPC will be divided into a regulatory body that is independent of the government and an investment institution, he added.

According to the diplomat, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has begun reforming the country’s energy sector.

Earlier in the week, the Nigerian leader set up a body consisting primarily of academics to advise him on anti-corruption reforms.
