BERLIN (Sputnik) — Merkel said at a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister David Cameron in Berlin:

On Thursday, the British government presented a bill on UK in/out referendum to the parliament. The legislation would see a vote take place no later than December 31, 2017. The question had been formulated "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union?"

Merkel added that if it was be necessary to introduce amendments into EU founding treaties to craft wording that would be acceptable for both the United Kingdom and other countries of the bloc – then it must be done.

"It is possible to find solutions. Some are in German interests, some serve the interests of the United Kingdom that is following a somewhat different path. I would like to find a solution."

Prior to holding the referendum, Cameron is seeking to revise UK relations with the European Union, pushing Brussels to reform the system of contributions to the bloc's budget and to provide the member states with greater powers to control migrant inflow.
