"The first five containers with Mexican bananas from Tabasco have already arrived in Russia," Beltran said Friday, adding that the bananas come from independent producers in the state of Tabasco.

According to the ambassador, this is the first trial delivery, which is expected to be followed by further supplies from the Mexican state.

Currently, Russia gets most of its bananas from Ecuador, which is responsible for up to 90 percent of banana export to Russia.

In the first five months of 2014 Ecuador delivered 580 metric tons of bananas to Russia.
