At least 100 workers were in the factory at the time of the explosion, the police told local media. A rescue operation is underway.

The death toll in the chemical factory blast in India's western state of Maharashtra has risen to 12, media reported, citing police.

Earlier on Saturday, the ANI news agency reported that 6 people were killed and 43 were injured in an explosion at a chemical factory in the district of Dhule.

According to Superintendent of Police Vishwa Padhare, as cited by the same news outlet, 12 people have been reported dead as a result of the accident, with 58 others injured.

According to a local police officer cited by media, multiple cylinders exploded at the factory located in the Dhule district.

Some media report that eight workers were killed in an explosion.

“Prima facie, multiple cylinders exploded at the factory. At least eight bodies have been recovered by police and rescue teams so far. Rescue operation is on,” said the Shirpur police station officer, as quoted by the Hindustan Times.

Teams of police, disaster management and fire brigade officials are working at the scene.

A massive cloud of smoke could be seen over the factory.

The cause of the explosion and who owns this factory remain unknown.
