Amandeep Singh, spokesperson, IGL told Sputnik: "Motorcycles will be retrofitted with CNG engines by the authorized company. These retrofitted two wheelers will be available for the pilot project starting in Delhi."
IGL has retrofitted CNG kits in 50 motorcycles for the pilot project.
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers data shows that annually approximately 16 million motorcycles are sold in India. It is estimated that there are 6 million motorcycles in Delhi alone constituting 64% of the total vehicles in Delhi. A Centre for Science & Environment study reported motorcycles are responsible for one third of vehicular pollution in Delhi.
The Indian government with an aim to reduce air pollution introduced six CNG trains in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh which are running successfully. Apart from this, Indian Railways has sanctioned conversion of 100 trains running on diesel-electric multiple units into dual fuel unit using CNG. Railway officials estimate that if 65% of diesel run trains are substituted with CNG run trains, carbon emissions can be reduced by 20% and nitrogen oxide emission by 52% of current levels.
