Thai PM in India: Defense and Maritime Security Cooperation High on Agenda

Prime Minister of Thailand General Prayut Chan-o-cha is visiting India on a three day visit. This is his first visit to India after becoming Prime Minister of Thailand on May 26, 2014.

Thailand’s Prime Minister is on a state visit at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is accompanied by a high level delegation including Deputy Prime Minister, several cabinet ministers, senior officials and business leaders.

The Thai Prime Minister will inspect the Guard Of Honour at President House and will also lay a wreath at the Mahatma Gandhi memorial at Rajghat on Friday.

He will meet Indian Prime Minister Modi on Friday and hold delegation level talks. Both the countries will strengthen their cooperation to combat terrorism, boost maritime security, defense ties and trade. The Indian side will push for the India-Myanmar-Thailand road project as a part of its Act East Policy.

India’s relations with Thailand are important and integral components of India’s strategic partnership with ASEAN. India’s ‘Act East Policy’ is complemented by Thailand’s ‘Look West Policy’ in bringing the two countries closer.

Sustained high level of bilateral exchanges and regular meetings of bilateral institutional mechanisms have provided a major fillip to India-Thailand relations and achieved progress in key areas of cooperation such as security, defense, commerce, science and technology and education.
