NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — According to The Daily Star newspaper, only 145 out of the 11,648 people detained over four days of raids face militancy and extremism charges, the rest is suspected of storage of drugs and arms as well as of committing miscellaneous crimes.
Police launched anti-extremists raids on June 9 following a recent wave of deadly attacks targeting religious minorities, including the murder of a top police official's wife in Chittagong city in southeastern Bangladesh.
In recent months, Muslim-majority Bangladesh suffered a surge of Islamist violence. Daesh, a terror group outlawed in the United States, Russia and many countries worldwide, claimed responsibility for some assaults.
