MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Sunday, Mateen, identified as an US citizen of Afghan descent, killed 49 people and injured 53 others at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. Mateen was reported to have been trained in the use of weapons. According to media reports, in 2013, he was investigated by US law enforcement for possible ties to terrorist organizations and a Florida man, who became the first US suicide bomber in Syria.
"There was no contact with us from the FBI, because the internal procedures from what we have heard from the media did not rank individually and its linkages with Afghanistan from what I understand has been extraordinary tenuous and weak," the Afghan president told CNN.
He added that the Afghan authorities did not know before who Mateen really was.
The Orlando massacre has become the deadliest mass shooting in the history of the United States, surpassing the death toll from the 2007 incident at the Virginia Tech university, which claimed 32 lives.
