Turkey's ambassador to Russia, Umit Yardim, said Wednesday that Ankara does not consider the deployment of international observers at its southern border with Syria at the moment.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia has been calling for international observers to be deployed to the Syrian-Turkish border to stop a trickle of Islamist militants entering the war-torn country from the north.

"This issue is not on Turkey’s agenda. Moreover, we do not see the need for it," Yardim told journalists at a press conference in Moscow.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called on Turkey’s western allies in mid-April to put pressure on Ankara to shut its border with Syria.
