Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit on Saturday the area in southern Japan affected by a recent earthquake to assess the damage caused by the disaster.

TOKYO (Sputnik) — On Thursday, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake took place near the regional capital of Kumamoto on Japan's Kyushu island. Multiple aftershocks followed the earthquake. At least nine people were killed and over 760 hospitalized.

"I would like to take proactive initiatives to provide support for those affected, including through the maintenance of quality living environments…. Tomorrow, I myself will visit the disaster area," Abe said during the meeting of the Emergency Response Headquarters.

The earthquake left 14,000 families without electricity, 20,000 families without water and 6,000 families without gas.
