NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – At least 11 people fell victim to overnight violence following elections in Bangladesh, local media reported Wednesday, citing official sources.
Five people were killed in the southwestern district of Pirojpur after security forces opened fire on suspected ruling party activists who had allegedly besieged election officials, the Newsnext Bangladesh online outlet said. Around 30 people are believed to be wounded.
Another six people are believed to have been killed across five other districts and towns, the website said, adding that the election commission put over 100,000 members of law enforcement agencies on alert.
The first round of voting for over 4,000 local government constituencies began on Tuesday, with the subsequent phases scheduled for March 31, April 23 and the following two months.
A total of 14 registered parties are taking part in the election, with the ruling Awami League (People’s League) party polling ahead.
