China continues to maintain partnership with North Korea, however, strongly opposes Pyongyang's nuclear program, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Tuesday.

BEIJING (Sputnik) — China appreciates friendly relations with North Korea, however, stands against Pyongyang's nuclear program, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Tuesday.

"Chinese-North Korean relations are strong friendly relations… We appreciate the well-established friendly relations with DPRK, North Korea wants to grow and be safe, we are ready to give them our support and assistance," Wang said.

The head of Chinese Foreign Ministry, however, underscored that China supports the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and "cannot put up with the plans to create nuclear weapons."

On January 6, Pyongyang said it had successfully carried out a hydrogen bomb test which triggered a wave of condemnation from the international community. On February 7, North Korea launched a Kwangmyongsong-4 satellite atop a long-range rocket, defying a UN Security Council resolution which bans Pyongyang from launching rockets that could be used as ballistic missiles carrying nuclear warheads.
