BEIJING (Sputnik) — A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck 28 miles southeast of the city of Tainan earlier on Saturday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake was shallow, which contributed to significant damages.
In China, tremors from the quake forced authorities to suspend some train service, according to local media reports.
Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, said earlier in the day that mainland China was ready to provide necessary assistance to handle with the consequences of the quake. In addition, China's Red Cross Society provided Taiwan with 2 million yuan ($300,000) for the issue.
