MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday promised to take prompt action against terrorism after a militant attack on India’s Pathankot air base near Pakistan, in a phone call with his Indian counterpart.
"Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif assured Prime Minister Modi that his government would take prompt and decisive action against the terrorists," a statement posted on the Indian government website read.
The countries exchanged information on what India has deemed a cross-border terrorist attack. "Specific and actionable information in this regard has been provided to Pakistan," the statement read.
India has repeatedly blamed Pakistani militants for attacks on its territory, specifically in India-administered parts of the contested Kashmir region in the north.
The attacked air base sits on the road to Kashmir close to the Pakistani border. A group of at least seven gunmen wearing army fatigues stormed the compound early Saturday, prompting a four-day standoff with Indian security forces. The military said Tuesday that a total of six militants had been killed.
