NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – A group of gunmen in army fatigues stormed the Pathankot air base in the Punjab region early on Saturday. Four of the attackers were taken out in a shootout that also killed at least seven security personnel.
In a Monday phone call, Ghani "strongly condemned the cross border terrorist attack" and extended condolences to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the loss of lives, according to the statement.
The Afghan leader also expressed support for India over a deadly Monday earthquake in the country’s northeast and promised to ensure security at the Indian consulate in northern Afghanistan that was attacked earlier today by unknown militants.
Relations between India and Pakistan have been strained since they declared independence from Britain almost 70 years ago. Both countries lay claims to the Kashmir region in India’s north. The attacked Pathankot base lies on the road to the contested area.
