MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the document, the Commission recommends the abolishment of the death penalty for all crimes, except for those related to terrorism and waging war.
The Commission decided that it was time for India to move toward abolishment of the death penalty, taking into account the broadening and deepening of the prospects of the right to life and the tightening of legal procedures in the field of cooperation between the state and the individual.
In 1955, India abolished the requirement for special conditions to replace the death penalty with life imprisonment. In 1973, the country introduced a requirement of the special conditions for the death penalty.
In 1980, the Indian Supreme Court has limited the death penalty, except for rare cases.
India is among 59 countries where courts still impose the death penalty.
