MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Rescue efforts continue in the state of Madhya Pradesh after up to six Kamayani Express coaches and four Janata Express coaches plunged into the river near the town of Harda late on Tuesday.
The CNN-IBN broadcaster cited authorities as saying 30 bodies have been recovered so far – 20 from the Kamayani Express and 10 from Janata – and scores more are feared dead.
At least two of the passengers were electrocuted during rescue efforts.
Flooding on the train tracks due to heavy rains was blamed for the twin derailments.
The outlet cited a railway spokesman as saying the Machak River bridge that the trains were crossing was submerged under water.
"So the last bogies of Kamayani Express got derailed. Simultaneously, on the other track the engines and coaches of the Janata Express also got derailed," Anil Saxena added.
The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations are underway.
