MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Chinese authorities closed an airport in the eastern city of Taizhou following an arson attack on board of an aircraft, the East China Regional Administration said in a statement.

On July 26, a man set a curtain and newspapers on fire on a flight en route from Taizhou to Guangzhou with 95 passengers and nine crew members on board.

The passenger managed to carry a flammable liquid and a lighter on board of the aircraft. Members of the crew and other passengers disarmed the man.

"East China Civil Aviation Authority decided to… temporarily close Taizhou airport on July 29, 2015," East China Regional Administration said in a statement published on its website on Tuesday.

The administration of Taizhou airport said in the statement that it closed the airport due to "significant security risks" after conducting an inspection following the incident.
