Many Chinese Couples Apply to Have Second Child After One-Child Policy Ease
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Chinese government could ease birth control restrictions to allow citizens to have two children beginning 2015, China Business Network (CBN) reported.

“Two-child policy can be possibly implemented this year, if everything goes well,” CBN reported, citing an anonymous government source on Wednesday.

The Chinese National Health and Family Planning Commission responded to the report, saying that the government had not yet set a time for two-child policy implementation.

China adopted a one-child-per-couple policy in 1980 to counter overpopulation, with severe fines for couples having two or more children. According to the National Population and Family Planning Commission, the policy prevented about 400 million births from its inception up to 2005.

Beijing eased child birth regulations in 2013, allowing couples in several regions to have two children without paying fines if both parents were the only children in their families.
