Kenyan Military Bombs Al-Shabaab Camps in Somalia Following Garissa Attack
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — At least 14 people were killed and 11 injured in al-Shabaab militants' attack on a village near Kenya's northeastern town of Mandera, Standard Digital News reported Tuesday.

Other media outlets and the Kenya Red Cross also reported the deadly attack in Mandera but did not specify who was responsible for the attack.

Mandera County Commissioner Alex Ole Nkoyo has confirmed that the attack was carried out by al-Shabaab militants.

"All indications are that they were Al-Shabaab militants. They destroyed metal grilled doors before they bombed the houses and opened fire on the innocent victims," the news outlet quoted Nkoyo as saying.

The death toll could increase, as those rescued and evacuated to the local hospital have sustained multiple injuries, the paper said.

According to the witnesses, the militants were throwing grenades at the victims' tents in the village and then opened fire on them while they were sleeping, the paper reported.

Al-Shabaab militant group is an al-Qaeda affiliate based in Somalia. The group is infamous for carrying out frequent gunfire and suicide attacks both in Somalia and neighboring Kenya.
