MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The 33-tonne motorized boat Kim Nivana was carrying approximately 200 passengers and crew. It was heading to neighboring Camotes island when it capsized several hundred meters off the port. It was initially reported that the tragedy claimed 33 lives.
Capt. Pedro Tinampay, commander of the PCG Eastern Visayas District told radio dzMM that as of 07:00 a.m. local time Saturday (GMT 22:00 Sunday) a total of 59 bodies have been recovered.
There reportedly were 140 survivors.
According to Tinampay, the investigation team is looking into overloading as most likely cause of the tragedy.
