India and Bangladesh have signed a landmark agreement exchanging hundreds of mutual enclaves and resolving a decades-long border dispute, local media reported Saturday.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — The 1974 Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) ratification documents allow the two neighbors simplify international borders and give citizenship to the estimated 51,500 people living in statelessness.

"I am sincerely thanking the government, people and all political parties of India for extending their support to the ratification of the land swap agreement," the Dhaka Tribune quotes Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as saying.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on a two-day visit to Dhaka where the sides also opened two bus services and Modi pledged a $2 billion loan to Bangladesh, hailed the deal as historic.

"History has been made today. We have resolved the border question that has lingered for years," Modi wrote on his Twitter microblog after the deal was signed.

India shares a 2,500-mile northeastern border with Bangladesh. The latest deal transfers 111 of India's border enclaves to Bangladesh in exchange for its 51.
