Buildings in Japan were shaken, but there are no immediate reports of damage.

A powerful earthquake struck Saturday 194 km off Japan's Ogasawara islands in the Pacific. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake magnitude was 7.8 and its the epicentre was 676 kilometres below the Earth's surface.

The Japan Meteorological Agency estimated the quake magnitude at 8.5. No tsunami alert has been issued.

Witnesses report that tremors were being felt in Tokyo, 870 kilometers from the epicenter.

Tokyo Electric Power Company operating the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant said there were "no abnormalities" at the plant following the earthquake.

The runways at Tokyo's Narita airport were operating normally but the high-speed bullet train service between Tokyo and Osaka was halted due to a power outage, according to NHK.
