The Israeli aircraft carrying the country's aid team cannot land in Nepal due to the aftershock caused by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the country, Israel Defense Forces spokesman Peter Lerner said Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, Lerner said that a team of 260 medical, search and rescue staff were ready to leave for Nepalese capital Kathmandu.

"Following today's #NepalEarthquake aftershock the 747s can not land. We are postponing the mission by 12 hours. I'll update ASAP," Lerner said on Twitter.

According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the country's leader Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to send a rescue delegation with medical aid Saturday following a telephone conversation with Nepalese officials.

As many as 2,500 people were killed in the 7.8 magnitude earthquake which shook Nepal Saturday morning. The disaster occurred about 82 kilometers (51 miles) northwest of the capital Kathmandu, causing massive damage in the region and injuring thousands. The area also experienced a powerful wave of aftershocks following the quake.
