At least ten Hindu pilgrims have reportedly died in a stampede on the outskirts of the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.

A stampede during a bathing ritual outside the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka has killed at least ten people and injured thirty more, news reports said.

The tragedy took place at the Astami Snan, one of the largest annual Hindu ceremonies in Bangladesh, which sees thousands of pilgrims wash in the Brahmaputra River.

"The dead included seven women and three men. They died near the Rajghat, the main bathing step on the river Brahmaputra, a local police officer was quoted by the news agency AFP as saying.

"We are investigating what triggered the stampede, but it seems that the tragedy was due to an unusually high number of pilgrims," the officer added.

The incident took place in the town of Narayanganj, which is located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of the capital Dhaka.
