Beijing Calls Singaporean Lee Kuan Yew Founder of China-Singapore Relations
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Thousands of Singaporeans are queuing at the Parliament House to pay tribute to the country's first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, who died on Monday at the age of 91, BBC reported Wednesday.

His body was moved by gun carriage from his official residence to the parliament earlier in the day. Before arriving at the destination, the late leader's body was carried through the main shopping and business districts of the capital.

On Tuesday, Lee's eldest son and the current Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, expressed his gratitude on Facebook to those who had already paid tribute as part of the week-long national mourning declared Monday.

The farewell ceremony will last until March 28. The funeral will take place on March 29 at 2.00 p.m. local time (6:00 GMT).

Lee Kuan Yew died Monday morning at the Singapore general hospital where he had been in treatment for severe pneumonia.

Lee Kuan Yew became first Prime Minister of Singapore in 1959 and ruled for 31 years, until November, 1990. He was the creator of hardline economic and anti-corruption reforms, contributing to Singapore's evolution into one of the world's economic capitals.
