Nepalese police fired teargas and water cannons at protesters who gathered in the capital to protest plans to vote on a controversial new constitution on Saturday, media reported.

Protesters threw stones and bricks at police forces who responded with around 20 rounds of teargas.

On Saturday, demonstrators packed the capital’s streets and shouted slogans calling for a constitution based on consensus. The demonstration turned violent when protesters tried to enter a restricted area near the parliament building.

According to a Kathmandu police officer, approximately 35,000 people took part in the rally.

The government’s push last month to hold a vote rather than seek agreement on disputed terms of the charter, sparked protests, deepening the rift between ruling parties and opposition.
