Law Wan-tung, a 44-year-old mother of two, was convicted on 18 counts two weeks ago, including for “inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.”
Law had repeatedly punched her maid, put a metal tube from the vacuum cleaner in her mouth, and even made her stand naked and wet in the bathroom in front of a fan, according to the South China Morning Post.
The maid, Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, also said she was denied pay and given small amounts of food and water, causing serious health issues.
The case has drawn international attention to the situation of the more than 300,000 migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong, most of who are women.
According to a 2013 report by Amnesty International, tens of thousands of Indonesians are trafficked to Hong Kong, many of whom face physical and even sexual abuse.
