MOSCOW, January 30 (Sputnik) – China stepped up an ideological campaign as the country's education minister vowed on Friday to ban university textbooks promoting Western values.
“[The universities should] never let textbooks promoting Western values appear in our classes,” Yuan Guiren said, during the educational forum as quoted by Xinhua.
Guiren urged the universities to “reinforce ideological management” with special attention on textbooks, adding that professors should support the "political, legal and moral bottom line" of the country.
He noted that this step was necessary in light of the considerable influence of the Western countries on Chinese students, which undermines the basic values of the Chinese ideology.
In December 2014, Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed the necessity of greater ideological supervision in universities.
