China’s first multifunctional offshore engineering ship will be able to lay conducting pipes under water, carry out underwater maintenance work, as well as support robot and diving missions in difficult sea conditions.

MOSCOW, December 28 (Sputnik) — China’s first multifunctional offshore engineering ship, which can function 3,000 meters under water, began operations Sunday, Xinhua reported.

The Offshore Oil 286 ship has a loading capacity of nearly 12,000 tons, can accommodate 150 crew members, and is fitted with a 400-ton crane to carry out installation missions under the water, according to the news agency.

The ship will be able to lay conducting pipes under water, carry out underwater maintenance work, as well as support robot and diving missions in difficult sea conditions.

Offshore Oil 286 was built by an affiliate of China National Offshore Oil Corporation, one of the country’s largest oil and gas producers, at a cost of 1 billion yuan (about $160 million).
