MOSCOW, November 18 (Sputnik) — Hong Kong authorities are currently clearing out one of the protest sites, with the police removing barricades after receiving the high court's authorization, the BBC News reported Tuesday.
Earlier, the clearance of the Mong Kok protest site was authorized by the high court. The police have also started clearing the site in the Admiralty area. Another protest camp in the Causeway Bay area remains intact at the moment, BBC reported.
The police met no resistance, as protesters said they would not oppose the court's order, the New York Times said.
Mass rallies began on September 26 when authorities in Beijing sought to change the procedure for the election of the Hong Kong chief executive. The protesters oppose the changes that would require candidates for the 2017 election to be approved by a nominating committee appointed by the Chinese government.
On October 28, it was reported that around 650,000 Hong Kong citizens have signed a petition against the Occupy Central movement.
