MOSCOW, November 16 (Sputnik) — At a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel amid the G20 summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he would think about bringing the German language back to schools after it was taken off to include Sanskrit.
"Prime Minister assured her (Merkel) that he himself is the votary of young Indian children learning other languages. He said how it is best done within the confines of Indian system, we will work it out," The Times of India quoted Indian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin as saying Sunday.
It is feared the removal of German from school curricula may sour diplomatic relations between the two countries.
"I am confident the Indian government will find a pragmatic solution that is a win-win solution," German Ambassador to India Michael Steiner said as quoted by the newspaper.
According to media reports, the decision of replacing German with Sanskrit was taken arising out of national interests. Reports from India also say German is currently offered at Indian schools only as an optional language.
