Residents of Damascus told Sputnik that on December 1, when medics at one of the city's maternity hospitals asked parents about the name of their newborn child, the couple's answer was "Russia".
The mother and father of 'Russia' said that they wanted to express their love and gratitude to the Russian people and government for their stance on the Syrian issue as well as for the numerous donations and humanitarian aid shipments sent to the war-torn country over the last five years.
Interestingly enough, a similar occurrence was reported earlier in Russia when a girl born late November in Moscow was named 'Syria' as her father serves in the military and was deployed in a mission to that country.
