BERLIN (Sputnik) — The German Foreign Ministry recommended German tourists on Thursday to abstain from visiting several regions of Egypt, including the Sinai Peninsula, due to a threat of terror attacks and kidnapping.
"There is an increased risk of terrorist attacks and the threat of kidnapping across the country. This can also be targeted against Western entities and citizens," a memo, published on the official website of the German Embassy to Egypt, said.
On Saturday, Russian Airbus A321 passenger plane en route from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg crashed on the Sinai peninsula, killing all 224 people on board. The catastrophe is the largest in civil aviation in Russian and Soviet history.
Several major international airlines, including Air France, Flydubai, Lufthansa, Air Arabia and Emirates, have announced the decision to suspend their flights over the Sinai after the crash.
