On Tuesday, the Massachusetts Legislature’s Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Agriculture held a hearing over whether the state should implement legislation requiring all foods containing GMOs in Massachusetts be labeled as such.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Consumers in the United States need more information about food products that contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in order to make the best decisions for their health, advocacy group Organic Consumers Association Associate Director Katherine Paul told Sputnik on Wednesday.

"The more informed consumers are, the better they can make decisions about what foods they want to buy — that's how a free market should work," Paul said.

Paul said the World Health Organization has labeled a GMO ingredient glyphosate as a possible carcinogen. She added that US consumers should know if the food they are eating contains glyphosate, specifically US agribusiness Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup.

"Since at least 80 percent of all GMO crops are engineered to withstand spraying with Roundup, a label that says "Produced With Genetic Engineering" will make it easy for consumers to avoid those foods produced with Roundup, if they choose to do so," Paul explained.

The bottom line is that US corporations must stop focusing on profits and start protecting their consumers, Paul concluded.

Also on Wednesday, advocacy group The Cornucopia Institute co-founder Will Fantle told Sputnik that labels are necessary to provide US consumers information about what they may put in their bodies.

"This type of food labeling legislation allows consumers to make that informed choice and determine the type of food they want to feed themselves and their families," Fantle said.

On Friday, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich announced the Russian government has decided not to produce food products that contain GMOs.
