The 68th Cannes International Film Festival is coming to an end with the winner of the Palme d'Or prize.

PARIS (Sputnik) – The 68th Cannes International Film Festival is coming to an end with the winner of the Palme d'Or prize to be announced at the final award ceremony on Sunday.

The competition screenings ended on Saturday with Justin Kurzel's "Macbeth." Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard performed the leading roles in the Australian director's interpretation of William Shakespeare's tragedy.

The German-Irish actor told reporters at the Cannes film festival that Macbeth murdered his king because he was suffering of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

"Never did it occur to me before this that this character was suffering from PTSD," Fassbender said as quoted by The Guardian on Saturday, comparing Macbeth's experience to that of soldiers coming back from Iraq or Afghanistan.

Kurzel's version of the Macbeth tragedy, partially shot in Scotland, also has a softer take on Lady Macbeth, who is played by Cotillard, the French Oscar-winner who is in Cannes for a fourth consecutive year.

Cotillard told reporters on Saturday that the Macbeths are "too damaged" to be able to have a successful relationship.

Kurzel's "Macbeth" was one of the 19 films that are competing in the Palme d'Or race. There are no Russian films among the competitors.

The Coen brothers (Joel and Ethan) are presiding over the Cannes jury this year.
