State of Emergency in Turkey 'a Logical Measure Aimed at Ensuring Security'

A state of emergency declared by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is a measure necessary to ensure security and stability in the country in the aftermath of the attempted coup, member of the Pakistani parliament Mian Abdul Mannan told Sputnik on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The three-month state of emergency entered into force in Turkey on Thursday.

"State of emergency is necessary to preserve security and restore control over the country after the coup attempt. Hundreds of people have been killed; several thousands of soldiers were involved in attempt to overthrow the legitimate government, so these are necessary and logical measures," Mannan said.

He underlined that the organizers of the coup attempt should be prosecuted, pointing out that the capital punishment is often used for such crimes all over the world.

On Thursday, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus announced that Turkey would suspend the European Convention on Human Rights as the country entered into a state of emergency.

On Monday, the EU foreign ministers urged Turkey to abide by the norms of the Convention, including the abolition of death penalty, when punishing participants of a coup attempt numbering in the thousands.
