Netanyahu Visit Marks Historic Change in Israel-Russia Relations - Eskin

Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Russia on Monday resolved many differences between Russia and Israel on Syria and gathered a positive reaction in Israeli society, publicist Avidgor Eskin told Sputnik.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Russia on Monday opened a new chapter in Russia's relations with Israel, political figure Avidgor Eskin told Sputnik.

During Netanyahu's visit, Russia and Israel agreed to exchange information on Syria to avoid any unintended clashes between Israeli and Russian forces.

"Now, as a matter of fact, all the problems are now solved in Russia and Israel, because if we dig deeper, Israel was wary at the beginning how to behave towards the civil war in Syria," Eskin told Radio Sputnik.

Eskin added that there was a split in Israel's government with defence minister Ehud Barak hostile towards Syria's government while security agencies supported the idea of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad staying in power.

The talks between Netanyahu and Putin also gathered a very positive reaction in Israel, Eskin said.

"If you open Israeli newspapers today, you will see a very positive atmosphere. Everybody reports about an extremely positive atmosphere yesterday in Moscow. And even a very conservative columnist <…> Caroline Glick, she writes that this cooperation between Russia and Israel is truly the best thing which could happen," Eskin added.
