Germany to Become Home to More Than 750,000 Refugees in 2015
MOSCOW (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — The accommodation of 800,000 refugees and asylum seekers expected to come to Germany in 2015, will cost the country over 8 billion euros ($9 billion), as one person costs 10,000 euros per year, a lawmaker form Die Linke Party told Sputnik Thursday.

On Wednesday, Germany's Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said that up to 800,000 asylum seekers and refugees are expected to arrive in Germany by the end of 2015.

"The cost of maintenance and accommodation of 800,000 migrants should be about 8 billion euros per year on the basis of 10,000 euros for each refugee," Sevim Dagdelen said.

The lawmaker added that there is a hidden expenditure that comes with those granted asylum, as refugee family members often arrive afterward.

The European Union is currently facing a major refugee crisis, as thousands of people from North Africa, the Middle East, Central and South Asia cross the Mediterranean Sea to escape conflict and economic hardship at home.

A huge influx of refugees has prompted broad public debate in Germany. Municipalities say they do not have the resources to accommodate them and far-right extremists commit attacks on refugee shelters.

According to the Frontex report, the overall number of refugees detected at EU borders in the January-July 2015 period reached 340,000.
