MOSCOW (Sputnik) More than 2.4 million people in Libya are in need of humanitarian assistance, and the international community should unite their efforts to stop the suffering of those in need, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of UN Support Mission in Libya Martin Kobler said.

"All of us, Libyans and partners in the international community alike, need to focus more on the growing humanitarian needs in the country and redouble our efforts to ease the suffering of the people… The humanitarian needs created by the crisis in Libya are enormous and this should serve as an incentive for us to do our utmost to give hope to the people, particularly those in urgent need of humanitarian assistance," Kobler said in a statement, dedicated to the World Humanitarian Day.

According to the United Nations, people in conflict-torn Libya lack medicines, vaccination and health-care assistance, while some 300,000 children are out of schools. The situation is also aggravated by the huge number of internally displaced people, migrants and detainees.

On August 19, the intentional community marks the World Humanitarian Day. The day was designated by the UN General Assembly in 2009 to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. The 2016 anniversary's slogan was "One Humanity."

Libya has been in a state of turmoil since 2011, when a civil war began in the country and long-standing leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown. In December, Libya’s rival governments — the internationally-recognized Council of Deputies based in Tobruk and the Tripoli-based General National Congress — agreed to create a Government of National Accord and end the political impasse. The GNA started to perform its duties on March 31.
