WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived to Somalia on Tuesday becoming the first America’s state secretary to visit the country, US State Department acting spokesperson Mari Harf announced in a statement on Tuesday.
“On May 5, Secretary Kerry landed in Mogadishu, Somalia to reinforce the United States commitment to supporting Somalia’s ongoing transition to a peaceful democracy…This is the first ever Secretary of State visit to Somalia,” Harf said.
During his visit, Kerry will meet with Somalia’s federal and regional government officials to discuss security cooperation, country’s progress to meet its reform as well as its development benchmarks in view of 2016 elections. The secretary will also meet with civil society leaders, and thank African Union troops for their role in stabilizing Somalia.
