UN Peacekeeper and Two Civilians Killed in Mali Rocket Attack

A UN peacekeeper and two civilians were killed on Sunday as militants attacked camps used by the United Nations' MINUSMA force in northern Mali.

The MINUSMA camp in Kidal came under attack in the early morning suffering more than 30 rocket and shell attacks.

"An initial assessment revealed the death of a MINUSMA soldier and that eight soldiers were wounded. The rockets also hit Kidal citizens outside the camp, and two deaths and four wounded were counted," according to the statement released by UN.

The statement further said that some of the wounded were being treated at the camps, and that air and ground patrols had been launched.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attacks, although Kidal has seen several uprisings from northern Mali's Tuareg separatist movement. Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and other jihadist groups has also attacked Kidal, including the 2013 murders of French journalists Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon.
