South Sudan Peace Talks Fail, UN Threatens Sanctions

Subscribe
South Sudan's peace process has broken down again, and this time UN sanctions could be used to punish both sides and impose an arms embargo against the country established in 2011.

Peace talks between South Sudan's government and rebels collapsed on Friday after sides failed to reach an agreement by a deadline of midnight on Thursday.

"Continuing a war flagrantly disregards the interests of you, the people," the mediator of the talks, Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, announced.

The United Nations earlier passed a resolution which stated that sanctions could be imposed against both sides, as well as an arms embargo.
