UNITED NATIONS, January 26 (Sputnik) — After the election of Edgar Lungu as Zambia's president, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon offered congratulations with peaceful voting and the support of the UN going forward.
"Ban Ki-moon has been closely following the recent presidential election in Zambia. He congratulates the people, Government and political parties of Zambia, as well as the electoral authorities, for the peaceful manner in which the country organized its presidential election, despite difficult weather conditions," the UN said in a statement Sunday.
The statement notes, that Zambia's long record of peaceful elections through democratic processes sets an example in the region.
According to the statement Ban also reaffirmed the UN readiness "to support the Government and people of Zambia as we all move towards a new sustainable development agenda."
The election was triggered by the death of Zambia's president Michael Sata in October 2014 at the age of 77 years old.
